I was just thinking about how truly creepy Bong Joon-ho’s “Salinui Chueok” (aka “Memories of Murder“) was. Then I thought about how scary ‘Paranormal Activity‘ wasn’t (NOTE: I mean the original, not the new one ‘Paranormal Activity 24‘). I watched it at 3 a.m. just to maximize the middle of the night willies with my easy to rattle ex. I even watched the alternate ending, the one that Steven Spielberg said “That’s some scary shit right there” about, and still…nothing. I came away from the viewing with a pre-dawn feeling of boredom and a vague annoyance that I later realized was attributable to the fact that the movie looks like a porn film with no fucking, a real near beer experience cinema-wise.
The lowest point (after the complete lack of nudity) was that the story was limited to two bad actors that had the worst and most non-sympathetic script possible. When the boyfriend stays even after the demon has apparently followed his cursed girlfriend and left a burnt photo from her childhood in the attic, I was really hoping his dumb ass would get shredded all gruesome like, that sort of behavior obviously deserving nothing else. What a maroon! I’d have been “You know I love you baby but that demon’s coming to kill your ass and I gotta go. Holler at your boy! Bye!”
